Vol.2

And here's the next chapter of the Spandau Ballet history ...

  The CBS Years
  1986

February ... Spandau return to San Remo to make up to their Italian fans for the cancelled tour dates, as a special treat they are the first ones to hear 'Fight For Ourselves'. It's an anthemic song that will be the first single off the forthcoming album

Spring ... The band find themselves back in Munich to record their album

28.06. ... Gary joins various musicians at the Artists Against Apartheit concert in Clapham Common, London. He sings 'When The Monolith Cracks' and one of the new songs, 'Through The Barricades'

July ... Spandau sign a deal with CBS and go to the South of France to finish off their new album

14.07. ... Finally they release 'Fight For Ourselves' as their comeback single which becomes a Top10 hit

27.10. ... 'Through The Barricades' is the second single release which storms to no.6 in the charts. The band travel around Europe for promotion. Gary discovers a new passion and starts to put European Spandaumania on film

29.11. ... The album is released and the 'Across The Borders' world tour starts in Italy where the band discover new dimensions of success and fan hysteria

December ... Chrysalis can't help it and also releases the 'Twelve Inch Collection'

  1987

02.02. ... 'How Many Lies' gets released and marks the band's 17th Top40 single in their eight-year career

February ... The band play San Remo once again, probably the only band that play there three years in a row

06.06 ... Gary and Tony use a short break in the tour schedule to perform at the annual Prince's Trust Concert in Wembley Arena, London

August ... Finally after many many months on the road the tour ends in Switzerland, perhaps in the UK the band is not the hottest thing around anymore, but in Europe and especially Holland, Spain and Italy they have more fans than ever before

  1988

07.05. ... The band use recording in London to improve their private lives, the first one to tie the knot is Gary

02.08. ... After months in the studio finally a life sign from the band, the single 'Raw' is released

  1989

14.08. ... The fans already thought the guys never wanted to get out of the studio ever again, but finally there is another single, 'Be Free With Your Love'. A perfect summer tune and everyone we know has no explanation why it wasn't the summer hit of the year

September ... It was a difficult birth but now it's here, 'Heart Like A Sky' eventually makes it into the shops and surprises fans with one song that is NOT written by Gary!!!

Autumn ... Finally the 'Krays' project starts rolling and the Kemps are busy being film stars - so the start of the upcoming tour has to be postponed

13.11. ... 'Empty Spaces' is released and fails to make the Top75 ... after 20 hits in a row this is the first time a Spandau single flops ... what's wrong with the English fans???

December ... The boys are back on the road, the UK tour begins and the year ends with a legendary gig at the Rotterdam Ahoy'

  1990

12.02. ... The group's last single 'Crashed Into Love' is released

January - March ... The band continue their 10th Anniversary Tour, on March 6th they play their last show at the Edinburgh Playhouse - at the time nobody could foresee that it would be the very last Spandau Ballet concert ever

September ... The boys come together for their last recording session in London, they do a cover version of 'The Boxer' which will probably be lost for the fans forever. On a private note Gary becomes the proud father of a little boy called Finlay

  1991
Well, frankly we think that the story of Spandau Ballet as a functioning band ends in 1990, but to be precise we have to report that there is a 'Best of ...' release in September. The band doesn't even get together for promotion, so - much to everyone's grief - here ends the chapter ...
