Special Report

As we have reported in our News section Gary has returned to the theatre stage once more to be part of 'The Rubenstein Kiss' ... the first play of author and director James Phillips that Gary has supported right from the first readings.

The play is based on the famous 1950s Rosenberg espionage case in the USA.

In the play the espionage story around Esther and Jakob Rubenstein is interwoven with another line of events during the 1970s, when two young people meet in a 50s exhibition and both fascinated by a picture of the Rubensteins try to find out the truth behind their case.

While the first part opens a lot of questions and has its humourous moments the second part becomes very dark.

This is when Gary makes his entrance as FBI agent Paul Cramner who does his best to make Jakob Rubenstein confess and give away his espionage connections.

The play raises a lot of questions about guilt and innocence, loyalty and betrayel. The more the story progresses you feel that everyone involved is a victim in some way.

We witness a search for atonement that in the last consequence can not be found.

So in the end it's a very sad story which leaves a lot of room for discussion about life, the decisions we make and whether or not there is something like 'the right thing to do'.

If you like real drama with a lot of moral dilemma you will definitley enjoy the play.

If you lare looking for light entertainment this evening at the theatre might be not the best idea for you though.

As we said, the play gives you a lot to think and talk about ... the best place for this is the cosy bar of the Hampstead Theatre ...

Doris with Martin Hutson (Matthew)

... where you even have the chance to exchange your thoughts with the entire cast (who all do a wonderful job by the way).

During the last week you could even bump into the odd other Spandau Ballet member, such as Steve Norman on December 14th or Mr Martin Kemp on the very last night ...

We hope that a lot of you out there had the chance to see the play ... unfortunately it will not move on to the West End but goes to Broadway with an American cast instead.
