  Summary

As we are dealing with an highly artistic film it's not easy to give a simple storyline. In this film nothing is really simple, two main stories are intervowen, the basic plot revolves around Max, a police marksman who lost faith in his abilities after he accidentally shot a hostage. His doubts are fuelled by one of his colleagues who tells him that the woman is fatally wounded while in reality her life is not in danger. With his confidence shaken Max accepts an offer to receive special bullets that cannot miss. Subsequently he gets a special assignment to guard chess grand master Maxim without him knowing about it. While performing his duty Max finds himself in the situation to watch his wife secretely as well after she coincidentally gets to know Maxim in a park. Max has to keep quiet about his mission which results in problems with his wife who also feels attracted to Maxim. The parallel subplot is a medieval fairy tale in which Max outtricks the devil (Kaspar, his colleague in the other part of the plot). Also there is a third sort of story, a frame that keeps the other two threads together. This frame story is set during the war where a mother tells her child a story about good and evil.

For everyone to whom the story sounds fairly familiar, the film was originally titled 'Freischütz' and is based on the opera by C. M. von Weber. As we already said, it's very hard to explain this film, you actually have to see it to understand the interaction of the plots. It's done very artisticly and very cleverly. In fact you should watch the film a few times to make sense of all the imagery and all symbols. Certainly it's NOT a cops & robbers film, even if the main charcter is a policeman who is trying to prevent an assasination. You have to take your time to watch the movie and you gotta be prepared to be dragged into the story. If you do so you will also accept the very surprising and completely surreal end. Definitely not everybody's cup of tea, but worth giving it a chance!!!
