Summary

When Alicija arrives in England from Poland for her wedding she learns that her fiance has changed his mind about marriage. She has no green card, can't find work without one (despite her academic degree) and therefore is threatened by deportation. In this desperate situation she meets Aiden, a struggling artist and casual crook, who has not a lot of talent for crime but for getting into trouble. Being almost as desperate for money as Alicija is for an English husband both team up and enter a marriage of convenience. But the troubles for both are not over yet ... the couple is gradually brought together by their problems and by the fact that they both have something to run from ...

Comment

Being only a small production the charme of this film lies clearly in its authenticity. Alicija's life in Poland and in her B&B in England is shown in such sympathetic detail and without any false glamour that you can't help but suffer with the characters in the film. Gary plays Aiden as such a charming loser that you really have to be glad that someone takes care of him in the end. Perhaps the film lacks the 'glossiness' of Hollywood productions, but this is not a disatvantage, in fact this is the reason why it's such an interesting and entertaining variation of the 'Green Card' storyline. It's not at all surprising that it has become a favourite on German tv being broadcasted over and over again!
